Parental Responsibility

The median age of the population in Laos is 19 with 35% of the population under 14.

Out of necessity, many children take on the role of parent often having to work to provide an additional income or to look after younger brothers and sisters. Our first stop in Laos was a small village that I suspect is typical of many others. Cows, chickens, dogs and pigs and children run free around the village

Houses are simply constructed and either built up on stilts or low to the ground. Apparently this signifies whether the women of the household are respectively committed or available. Rivalry in romance is apparently settled by an archery competition or by who can grow the most rice!
